Positionality

My memories as a child are that of being happy, loved and enjoying family get-togethers. I was born in Toronto and raised in Quebec City until the age of 10 in a working-class family. We moved locations frequently over the course of my childhood with my father being in the Airforce. I am a fifth-generation Canadian whose ancestors are from France, and Ireland on my father’s side, and Denmark, Germany, Wales, and Irish on my mother’s. I am a white middle-aged married woman who identifies as cisgender and heterosexual. I was born privileged in life, and it has become a passion to be a fair person who craves knowledge to grow within and share kindness. I experienced being sexualized in different workplaces in my younger years which I accepted as the cultural norm growing up. I began my nursing career later in life and can now celebrate 15 yrs of working in multiple specialized areas. Working in health and travelling has opened my mind to the reality of the social injustices and lack of equality for our Canadian population and the rest of the world. I will do my best as a privileged Canadian to be part of the change needed to balance the inequalities in our diverse populations and accept that I am part of this imbalance through no fault of my own, through birth.
